Work in Schools

Who Does the Work? Two voluntary sector homelessness organisations divide the work between them: Open Door Fife and Cornerstone.

Who Pays for It? Fife Council provides funding to Open Door Fife and Cornerstone to carry out the work.

How is it delivered? Staff from the Open Door Fife and Cornerstone go into schools to provide information and advice to young people about housing options and issues around homelessness.

Who is Targeted? Pupils in S3-S6

What Resources Are Used?

  • SCSH’s Streets Ahead Guide in school libraries. A local directory of services was created in 2005 that can be used stand alone or inserted into the Streets Ahead Guide.
  • Lesson Plans based on SCSH I'm Offski! have been used as the basis for some lessons.
  • Leaving Home CD rom produced by Open Door Fife
  • Leaflets created by Cornerstone

Commentary

Every school in Fife has been contacted directly by the projects with teachers being asked in the first instance to discuss how the school can accommodate leaving home and housing education on their curriculum. The two projects aim to deliver sessions at all 19 secondary schools over a three-year period.

Information and advice can be delivered in a variety of formats, including talks and presentations to general classes, focussed discussions with smaller groups and talks to teachers. The projects have disseminated information on leaving home and housing education by placing resources in school libraries. This information had included SCSH’s Streets Ahead Guides.

Open Door Fife and Cornerstone also take part in school open days and induction weeks by hosting a stall with information on leaving home and housing education. The projects are building up resources to use, including leaflets, CD-ROMs and pencils, that all have details of where to get help locally.

Other project work in Fife takes place specifically with Lochgelly School . There is an annual event focussing on school leavers skills which includes leaving home and housing education.
