Planning your move

If you are leaving to study or work you need to find accommodation in the area you are moving to.

If it is simply time for you to move on from home you should get organised money wise before leaving. The first place to go and visit is your local Careers Scotland office who can help you with your employment options and advise you about benefits.

You can get free confidential advice from Shelter's free housing advice helpline on 0808 800 4444 if you don't want to speak to someone local about moving.

Availability of housing

Finding places to stay in rural areas is difficult, especially council or housing association ones. The waiting lists can be years long.

You might get a winter let from a private landlord. This means that you can have a place until April and then you have to leave so it can be let to tourists.

Some people live in caravans and you can sometimes get lodgings in houses and farms with spare rooms.

Applying to the Council and housing associations

If you decide to apply for housing in your area you should contact your local Council Housing Department .

In some rural areas there are ‘Common Housing Registers'. This means that when you apply to the council they put your name down on Housing Association and other landlords' waiting lists as well as their own. If there isn't one, ask for a list of the other landlords and apply to them yourself, as this increases your chances of getting a place.

Council housing in a new area

To apply for a place from the Council in a new local authority area it helps to be able to show that you have a good reason for wanting to move there, like having a job.

Think your move through carefully before applying as it could affect how easy it is to return home.

It is a good idea to talk to your local youth information project or a worker at your local Citizens' Advice Bureau when you are applying for housing. They may be able to point out things about your situation that help you get a house sooner.
