Your
home is your own private
space. Here are some ideas
of how to protect it.
You
could get mortise locks,
window locks, a peephole
and a door chain so
you can check who is
there before opening
the door.*
A
flat with a phone entry
system is good if you
can get it.*
You
can mark any really
valuable things you
have with the special
pens that only show
up under infrared light.
Keeping serial numbers
and details of the equipment
is good so you can identify things if they get stolen.
* These cost
money so you could try
asking your landlord
to fit them. If you
are doing it yourself,
you should get your
landlord's permission
before making changes.
Keeping
safe is all about taking
a bit of time to think
before you do things.
These are some ideas that
can help you feel safe.
Only
give your address, phone
number and personal
details to those you
know and trust.
Try
to keep the peace with
your neighbours. Be
careful you or your
visitors don't disturb
them and try not to
get involved in arguments
as you will have to
live with them afterwards.
If someone is winding
you up just ignore it.
You will look more confident
that way.
If
you have a flat warming
party only ask people
that you trust to come
round.
Ask
friends to call you
before they come around
so you know who to expect.
If
your area is unsafe
you can get an attack
alarm. Contact your
Council Social Work
Department
or local youth information
project
as they might be able
to get you one for free.
Never
tell anyone your security
codes for entry systems
to flats or your PIN
number for your bankcard
or mobile.
If
workers from the gas,
the electric, the phone
or the Council need
to come into your home
always check their ID
before letting them
in.
Be
careful if you are drinking
or at a party that no-one
spikes your drink.
