It's
amazing what you can get
second-hand and sometimes
it can be far cooler than
new stuff (and cheaper).
Places to look for bargains
include:
Second-hand
furniture shops.
Car
boot sales.
Jumble
sales.
Street
markets.
The notice board in
supermarkets and local
shops. It's also worth
telling family and friends
what you are looking
for as they may have
things they can give
you.
SAFETY – If you
buy electrical goods,
be very careful that
they are safe and that
they work before paying.
If you get a gas cooker
make sure that you have
it fitted by a Corgi
registered gas fitter.
They are listed in the
Yellow Pages with a
Corgi Shield.
Some
organisations run furniture
projects that have furniture
to give to people who
are setting up home. Ask
your local youth information
project
or Citizens' Advice Bureau if they know of any.
You could also check out www.morethanfurniture.org.uk for an up to date list of furniture projects across Scotland.
If
you
want
help
applying
for
money
for
furniture,
you
should
talk
to
your
local
youth
information
project
.
In some
situations, like leaving hospital or a hostel
you can apply for a Community Care Grant to help with setting
up home.
If
you have absolutely
nothing and are about
to move into a place
you can apply for a
Crisis Loan to get you
started.
There
is no guarantee that you
will get these but it
is worth applying. If
your application is refused
you can ask for a review.
It is best to get advice
on this.
