Food, exercise and sleep

Food - try to have a diet that gives you your essential vitamins, with enough fruit and vegetables to balance the junk food and snacks. Drinking lots of water will help you feel good.

Exercise - it can help you meet people and improve how you feel about everything else. Most places offer free or reduced rates if you are a young person or on benefits.

Sleep - the amount we need varies but if you have too little it will start to tell and you may get ill and down. It is best to have regular sleeping hours.

Eating well on a small budget

Money doesn't go far but these ideas may help.

  • Shopping in discount stores like Kwik Save, Lidl and Aldi saves money. Look out for special offers and reduced prices.

  • Small food stores are expensive so try to avoid shopping there.

  • Pasta and rice are cheap to buy, really filling and healthy.

  • Buying fresh fruit and vegetables as you need them stops them going off.

  • Meat from a local butcher can be cheaper than supermarkets.

  • It is generally cheaper to make meals rather than buy ready-made ones so get a cookery book from the library or a second hand shop and see what you can create.

  • When you cook a meal make extra and freeze some for another time.

  • If you've got food left over try and use it for another meal rather than throw it away.

Keeping healthy on a budget

  • Find out if your Council offers leisure cards that allow you to use leisure centres cheaply or for free.

  • It is free to register with a doctor and a dentist and this means you have someone to go to if you need to.

  • You might be entitled to free prescriptions – ask your doctor or Jobcentre Plus .

  • Cigarettes, alcohol and drugs are really expensive. You should try working out how much you spend each week and see if you can cut down. They only make you feel better in the short-term and long-term can lead to you getting really down.
